May Challenge

6 x 12" Layouts by Kimmarie & Joni "One of our DT members, Joni, challenged us to do a 6 x 12 layout. Since I had already completed a few creations for this month, I decided to play around with this size. At first, I had a bit of trouble because I wanted to use 3 pictures on one layout which wouldn't fit no matter how I tried. Finally, I just picked 2 pictures and went with it. To my surprise, I completed the layout within 15 minutes. I loved how simple it was to do. I decided not to use too many embellishments. Since I finished so quickly, I used 2 other pictures that went with the first layout and made a second one. Two layouts in less then a half hour including hidden journaling on both, woohoo!

I also used Rachel's Frugal Friday Tip ~ DIY Pop Up Dots. I was too lazy to get off the couch to go find my pop up dots, so I decided to try Rachel's idea. It worked great!

Thanks for the tip Rachel."

"Since I always do 12x12, I decided to do a "different" size layout to get out of my box....and so I went for a "weird' size too! 6x12

This was fun and can be done vertical or horizontal.... Here's what I came up with."

Joni
Have you tried a new size lately? Share your new size layout with us and if you use any of our Frugal Friday Tips, point it out to us. Have a great day!

May Challenge

It's the Climb by Tere

Design Team Member Tere submitted this layout for the May "Get Out of Your Box" Challenge. Here is her description:

After much thinking about what my "out of the box" was... I decided to go easy on myself.

I used a song title as my inspiration. I've scrapped about my favorite singer, my favorite songs, but never knew how to use a title or the lyrics of a song for a layout.

"It's the climb" ( Miley Cyrus) is one of our favorite songs in our family. And I love when my son uses it to remind us that sometimes things in life are just "another mountain" and that "It's the climb" that matters.

Also outside my box, was using more embellishments.

May Challenge

Squirt Buddies by Joseph
Design Team Member Joni's son Joseph submitted this layout for the May "Get Out of Your Box" Challenge. Here is their description:

Hi, my name is Joseph and my momma is a scrapbooker. I wanted to do a scrapbook page this week so I asked Momma to help me. I picked pictures of me and Kyle playing Super Soakers. I asked for half white paper and half blue paper. Momma made me pick out the blue. Then I got crayons out of my homework box and melted them like drips of water.

Momma (Joni Parker) here...noting that 1) he is done explaining... 2) I held the heat gun 3) the rest of the story is..... he dug through my extensive alphabet collection to pick out letters that were "kind of cursivey" (his words). And then wrote (with pen) the "journaling".

The reason we are submitting this layout is because when my 6 year old son decided he wanted to "do challenges" with me, I felt that the more the merrier!! So, I figured this was a good place to start. Talk about "outside the box"!!! 6 year old, MALE...melting crayons on a scrapbook page? Yep!

And...I encourage you to get your kids involved in your "ART" -- I had a total blast just watching him be creative and telling me what he wanted next. After an hour (or less), he was done and I was able to get back to work.....INSPIRED by my own son!!

Thanks for letting him share!! I've told him that he gets to read the comments that you guys leave about his layout, so PLEASE leave him some love!!

May Challenge

May Get out of your Box Challenge!

The May challenge is to do something outside your "box". In other words - outside of your ordinary. It could be a new technique or a different style, or size... anything that is outside of your ordinary!

I suggest you look at your last month or so of layouts and determine what you Usually do - or use. Then do something totally different. It could be something you've been wanting to do - but just need that little "Push" out of your comfort zone to do it! This may take some thought as to what "rut" am I in. I usually get to the point that I feel like all my pages look the same - are you there? If so, what makes them all the same? If that is not your issue - maybe you've really wanted to do something new or different - but something is holding you back - maybe it's that Box your in.

So - - - the challenge is to get out of that box - and try something either totally new - or just
unusual for you.

So "get out of your box". Send a picture of your project and a brief description to scrappinpsycho@live.com. Your project will be posted here. The challenge will end May 31st @ 6:00 PM CT. A winner will be chosen and offered a spot on our Guest Design Team for the month of July.

May Challenge

Graduates by Stephanie

Design Team Member Stephanie submitted this layout for the May "Get Out of Your Box" Challenge. Here is her description:

"When I thought about what was outside the box for me, I couldn't really think of what my box is when it comes to scrapping. Then I realized my box is WAY bigger than scrapping, it applies to my everyday life. I'm a procrastinator. I never do anything in a timely manner. So, when I realized this I knew that it meant I had to scrap something the week it happened. So, I did. I graduated from college last weekend and quickly responded by ordering my photos, finding some green and orange/copper paper, and sitting down at my craft desk. I set forth with a "git 'er done" attitude and conquered my task with timeliness. I also used all designer papers (SEI Winnie's Walls), inks (Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Inks, and embellishments (American Crafts' Thickers) AND borrowed the general layout from one of Laurie's Christmas pages which is all pretty out of the box for me.

Now it's your turn. What box are you in? What can you create if you "get out of your box". It's just this once! Send us a picture and description of your creation so we can publish it here. You will also become elligible to be chosen for the Guest Design Team. So get out of that box - and get creative! See all the details below in May Challenge.

$$Frugal Friday Tip$$

Never use 12 x 12 paper when you don't have to.... by Kathy

This weeks Frugal Friday Tip is very simple - but not always followed. I can not bear to cut into a piece of 12 x 12 paper - unless I have nothing smaller that will work. When I started scrapping I scrapped with 8 1/2 by 11" paper. So, I've got tons of that size paper. Most of my scrapping is 12 x 12. My solution is to use 12 x 12 as my background - and then use smaller pieces for everything else (including mats).

This is a page in progress -the red background is of course 12 x 12 - but everything else is either cut from a 8 1/2 by 11" or is a scrap. The three strips will appear to be the same length once the page is complete

The yellow is actually a scrap that was much shorter than 11" - so
I actually split it in two - and will place it on the background so that it appears to be 11" and use the picture to cover the split. No one will ever know that the strips are not all the same length - or that I didn't use 12 x 12" paper.

My layout will have hand made paper flowers on it, which will all be punched from this assortment of scraps.

This is a great way to save on paper - especially if you have paper smaller than 12 x 12.

I'll post this project once it is complete - only You and I will know that I split the paper and used scraps!

Do you have a Frugal tip you'd like to share. Just email your tip, along with pictures to
scrappinpsycho@live.com. We'd love to post it here.

May Challenge

You In? by Kathy

This was way outside of my box. I kept seeing this advertisement on the back of the magazine in the B-room. I kept thinking it would make a great layout - but how? I know other people use advertisements as their inspiration - but this one was kinda weird! Anyway, I decided to at least tear it off and put it in the Asylum.

I pulled it out and thought this would make a great layout - but what pictures - then I just happened to pull out this picture of Niko inside PaPa's shirt - what could be better? So, despite all my reservations, as to how I could pull it off - I did it! Almost everything on this page is outside of my box - and weird. I did it and I really like it!

Posted by PicasaHow far outside your box can you go? Take the challenge and submit your project. You could win a spot on the Guest Design Team. See all the details in May Challenge - below.

May Challenge

You Are... by ChristyReader Christy Stickler sent this layout for the May "Get Out of Your Box" Challenge. This is what she had to say about her layout:

"Lately, I have been experimenting with black and white photos and with fussycutting. both are not part of my usual repertoir. For this project, I fussy cut sassafrass lass PP. I added Sassafrass lass brads to some of the flowers. Some of the flowers have been adhered with 3-d foam to add dimension. I used Stampin up and MM Ribbon.

Now, it's your turn. "Get out of your box" and send us a picture and description of your project to Scrappinpsycho@live.com. You could be on our next Guest Design Team. See all the details below in May Challenge.

May Challenge

By Rachel
This layout was created by Design Team Member Rachel. She used Basic Grey Kioshi. This is what she said, "I stepped out of my box by distressing the edges and using a lot of ink. I also layered more than I usually do with this layout and used the punch that was sitting at the bottom of my bag!

I did however stay inside my box with hidden journaling and an 8.5 x 11 layout which is the size I'm most comfortable working in. I really like the finished product because the challenge encouraged me to step outside my own box and try something new.
Posted by PicasaNow it's your turn. What box are you in? We'd love to share your creation - see all the details in May Challenge below. You may also want to accept the Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge - see all the details below. Your contributions could get you a spot on our Guest Design Team.

Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge

Delight in Life by Kimmarie

Design Team Member Kimmarie completed this layout for the Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge. Here is what she had to say about it: "This is my take on Robin's creative sketch. I took these pictures of my 18 year old daughter, Sara this month. She was all dressed up to go to a communion party with her boyfriend, Travis. She looked so pretty, I just couldn't resist snapping a bunch of pictures of her. I printed some in black and white as well, I love how easy it is to do that. I had trouble getting the papers to work on a 12 x 12 size so I decided to go with 10 x 10 and it seems to work just fine. The papers I used are from a DCWV kit, Stampin' Up Delight In Life stamp and markers, MM bling which I colored to match my layout and the flower is from Petaloo.

I enjoyed doing this layout and I actually accomplished 3 of SOS challenges in one layout. The first is following Robin's sketch, second I colored my bling as taught by Rachel on a Frugal Friday Tip and third I scrapped a 10 x 10 which is Out of My Box. I can't wait to see what you all do with Robin's awesome sketch, maybe try doing something Out of the Box with it as well.

May Challenge

Thank You Card by Belinda

Posted by Picasa

Reader Belinda submitted this card for the May "Get Out of Your Box" Challenge. Here is what she said about her project. "This was such a fun challenge and I'm sure I'll be challenging myselfto reach outside the box more in the future!

Out of the box items:

STYLE I decided to try something that wasn't my style -- I'm a CAS stamperin case you haven't noticed. This card is totally not my style(definitely more scrappy) but I love trying things that aren't me.It's like how when I was a kid, I'd hop around the basement playingdress-up with my mom's old dresses and hop around in her insanely highheels.

NO HOARDING I am one of those totally guilty of buying patterned paper because it's pretty (and hoarding it). I tell my husband that at least paper is so much cheaper than a cute skirt... Normally my projects have very minimal patterned paper. So today I decided to pull my papers out and create a card where much of the design is coming from the patterned papers The colors are so fun though, aren't they? I really should pull my patterned papers out more often!

ROSETTE The other thing that's new is the rosette base. I've seen lots of rosettes created and I finally decided to do one myself. I created a rosette flower by cutting a strip of 12 by 12 paper. I scored it every 1/2 inch and border punched the edges. More information on the card is here."

Now it's your turn to take the Challenge. See all the details below in "May Challenge".

May Challenge

Graduation card by Ren-Yi

Reader Ren-Yi submitted this card for the May "Get Out of Your Box" Challenge. Here is her description:

Why is this "out of the box" for me?

Non-A2 card format: Since the graduation gift was going to be cash, it needed to fit in card nicely.

Better cardstock: I recently hit a frustration point when making cards that my current "Recollection" card stock (at 65 lbs.) is not cutting anymore. So I have upgraded to Bazzill cardstock (80 lbs.) until I can find better. Any recommendations? I am leaning towards GinaK or PTI, but would love to hear your input.

VersaMark as inking: I have seen so many lovely examples used, where VersaMark would be used to deepen the shade of the card stock with a stamp image. This actually resulted in a boo-boo. Can you guess what it was? I tried to put a border along the bottom of the card. But since the stamp image was not long enough, I tried to line it up and it resulted in a mess that I decided to cover with the sentiment. After that the card looked like it needed a little something else and I decided to use the individual circle to create a random versa-marked background.

Keep it simple: I never seem to be able to stay to just two colors. So this time I practiced restraint. Notice that I couldn't resist with the red surf board. But overall I think I kept my intent...

Thanks for the fun challenge!
Ren-Yi

Thanks Ren-Yi - you did a great job - and no one would ever guess you made a mistake.

Now it's your turn to take the challenge. See all the details in May Challenge below.

May Challenge

In Living Color by Joni

Posted by Picasa
Design Team Member Joni did another "out of my box" layout...it was also for another DT she is on....for a "rainbow" challenge.

This is what she said, "I had a challenge to do a "Rainbow" layout. So I did this layout, but I also kept the "out of my box" concept in mind for Scrap Our Stash. I don't usually make my own embellisments...don't usually take that much time on a layout and usually use "stock" embellies. On this layout, I made the ribbon rainbow on a piece of matching cardstock so it was one big seperate piece. Then I cut a circle from yellow fabric, stitched it on (with the torn fabric rays) and left a little hole under where I knew the "ribbon rainbow" would hide it. I used that hole and stuffed some batting to make the sun puffy and then adhered (popped) the ribbon rainbow on top. I also used ribbon and fabric to make my flowers and ric-rac for my stems & leaves. It was very labor intensive, but I love how it turned out and it's really out of my box. Also, I used NO patterened paper....that's outside my box too"!!!

Now it's your turn. Do something that is "outside your box" and submit it for a chance to become a Guest Design Team Member. See all the details below in May Challenge.

May Challenge

Zack by Mardi
Posted by PicasaDesign Team Member Mardi submitted this layout for the May "Get Out of Your Box" Challenge. This is what she had to say about it. "Wow, did I ever step out of my box! I recently purchased a Cricut Expression, I know you are saying, what took you so long? I decided to step outside of my box by creating several of my embellishments with the Cricut. Now I am asking myself, what took me so long to purchase one of these fantastic machines! I am creating an album for my Godson for his graduation party and this is one of the many layouts I have included in his album.
Just remember you do not have to spend any money to step outside of your box, it could be as simple as using more photos on a layout, creating a two page layout, trying a new technique, or slanting your photos on your page, etc.! Let's see those projects!
Also, how about doing the Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge too.
See all the details for both the May Challenge and the Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge below.
And don't forget to leave a comment or become a follower in order to become eligible for the May Flowers prize package from our Sponsor "A Little Dash of This and That" - see the prize package in the sidebar - and details on the contest below.

$$Frugal Friday Tip$$

Clay Buttons by Jamie

I saw Jamie's post on these buttons and thought they would make a great Frugal Friday Tip. This is what Jamie posted on her blog "I was at Joann's the other day and they had Transparent Fimo on clearance for $0.97 for the big bundles! Just $0.97! I haven't worked much with clay (unless play-doh counts!) but I have always been intrigued by it - so how could I possibly pass up this deal! We all know that we can't use coupons on sale/clearance items...which would explain the "pasta maker" now sitting on my art table! Now that I have the clay and I can make it all the same thickness what else could I do but make BUTTONS!
Of course, these are just my first attempts but I am really enjoying it! I baked them for 30 minutes at 230 degrees and then grabbed my Copic Sketch Markers, my air compressor, and my Copic airbrush kit and started playing! After I got them 'painted' I took them outside and placed a coating of acrylic sealer on them and let them dry! How cool is it that you can match buttons exactly to the color of your Copic colorings! Yep - I will definetly be making more...lots more! Check out Jamie Lane's blog for even more buttons.
Do you have a frugal tip you'd like to share? Just email the tip - along with pictures to scrappinpsycho@live.com . We'd love to share it. If you complete a project using this or any of our other Frugal Friday Tips - please share it - we'd love to post it here.

May Challenge

Our Little Princess by Kathy
Posted by PicasaI did this layout for the May "Get out of Your Box" Challenge. It has several things that are similar to my "regular" style - but I did do somethings that are outside of my norm. First of all I put my pictures at a slant. I also used bling - which is unusual for me - the banner is something new I decided to try - and the hat pin - is something I've had in my stash forever - and finally used.
Now it's your turn to take the challenge. What box are you in? Do you always put your pictures on the page in a straight line? Is there some embelishment that you've been going to use but haven't? Then this is the challenge for you. Complete a project using the challenge and email it to scrappinpsycho@live.com. You could become one of our next Guest Design Team Members. Check out all the details in the May Challenge below.
